180 million years old

Earth's oldest surviving ecosystem

Why it matters

Nature doesn't need us
But we need nature

The Queensland Wet Tropics is one of the oldest continuously surviving rainforests on Earth. A living museum that predates the dinosaurs, and it's under pressure. Every square metre you protect is real land, secured through our conservation partners.

🦅 30% of all Australian mammals, reptiles and frogs live here
🌳 3,000+ plant species found only in this forest
🦋 ~65% of Australia's butterfly species live here

Extraordinary lives
depend on this forest

Tap any card to discover the animal's story.

Ecosystem Engineer Southern Cassowary
Southern Cassowary

One of Australia's most iconic endangered birds. The Southern Cassowary is the only animal large enough to disperse the seeds of over 150 rainforest plant species. Lose the Cassowary and you lose the forest.

Night Pollinator Spectacled Flying Fox
Spectacled Flying Fox

A keystone species of the Wet Tropics. Flying foxes cross-pollinate trees that feed all other wildlife. Lose them, and the forest loses its midnight life force.

Australia's Largest Butterfly Cairns Birdwing
Cairns Birdwing

The Cairns Birdwing depends entirely on pristine forest habitat. Its caterpillars feed on a single native vine species, making habitat preservation critical to its survival.

Freshwater Indicator Rainforest Frog
Rainforest Frog

The Wet Tropics houses over 30 frog species, many found nowhere else on Earth. Their health tells scientists everything about water quality and ecosystem balance.

Pollinator Rainbow Lorikeet
Rainbow Lorikeet

Rainbow Lorikeets feed on nectar and pollen, moving from tree to tree. In doing so, they transfer pollen and drop seeds, helping the forest regenerate across wide areas.

Seed Cracker Sulphur-crested Cockatoo
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo

Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are intelligent, social birds that form strong bonds and communicate with loud calls. Their powerful beaks help crack seeds and nuts, while their feeding habits also help disperse seeds through the landscape, connecting them to the health of the forests they call home.
