Djarawong Rainforest, Lot 1RP807619
Every Square is a real square metre
Choose how much rainforest you want to protect near Mission Beach in far north Queensland. Every Square is mapped to the metre and looked after by the same people on the ground.
- 21,000 m² Remnant rainforest
- Wet Tropics World Heritage Area
- From $50 One square metre
Five sizes
Choose how much you protect
The Squares are all the same rainforest and the same ten-year commitment. What changes is how much of it you take on, and how much each metre costs you.
1 / 5
Seed Square
One metre by one metre. About the size of a doormat.
One metre of Djarawong rainforest with its own coordinates. Enough to put a name on the live map and see the exact patch of canopy you are looking after. It is also the easiest Square to give someone.
- 1.5 kg CO₂e a year
- 1,100 L Freshwater a year
2 / 5
Triple Shield
Three metres side by side. About the footprint of a queen bed.
Three Squares at $33 a metre. A sensible step up when one metre feels smaller than what you wanted to do, and still an easy amount to give.
- 4.5 kg CO₂e a year
- 3,300 L Freshwater a year
3 / 5
Habitat Nine
A three by three block. About a small bedroom floor.
Nine Squares at $28 a metre. A block of forest floor big enough that a cassowary walking through it has room to stand.
- 13.5 kg CO₂e a year
- 9,900 L Freshwater a year
4 / 5
Forest Friend
Five by five. Roughly two car parking spaces.
Twenty-five Squares at $20 a metre. Enough to name a run of Squares after a whole family, or to hand over as a gift that still means something in 2036.
- 37.5 kg CO₂e a year
- 27,500 L Freshwater a year
5 / 5
Canopy Keeper
Ten by ten. About the floor of a three-bedroom apartment.
A hundred Squares at $10 a metre, the lowest rate we offer and the largest Square on this page. If you want more than a hundred metres, write to us and we will arrange it directly.
- 150 kg CO₂e a year
- 110,000 L Freshwater a year
Impact figures are measurements of what protected forest does. They are not carbon credits and not an offset claim. Prices are in Australian dollars.
The same for every size
What comes with a Square
Whichever size you picked, one metre or a hundred, this is what arrives with it.
A place on the map
Every Square has GPS coordinates. Find yours on the live map and zoom in on the canopy above it.
Your name on it
Name your Square whatever you like. It shows on the map, and you can change it later.
A Squareholder certificate
A personalised certificate recording how many Squares you hold and where they sit.
Protection you renew
We want this rainforest standing permanently. Ten years is what your Square pays for, and we come back to you to renew before it runs out.
A Square is a documented unit of protection linked to a specific square metre of real conservation land. The land title stays with our conservation partner, C4 in Mission Beach. A Square is not a financial investment and does not transfer land ownership.
Every Square, mapped
Find the one you are looking at
The map is live. Squares that are taken carry the name their Protector gave them; the rest are still open.

Glad to be part of the solution
trying to make a small difference
Wonderful!!
Hi there, thank you for your brilliant effort. Juat a thought, could I get a location od my square on google maps? That would make me very proud :-) Svava
Wonderful initiative
I love what you're doing, and it was very easy to buy my square. I get really upset when I watch David Attenborough documentaries about deforestation and global warming, so it's nice to be able to take a small bit of action. I really hope this idea catches on worldwide and more of our forests and rainforests can be saved.
Eine gute Idee! Ich hoffe, bald auch auf Deutsch von meinem Square zu hören. #ecosia und Ihr sollten zusammenarbeiten
I love this 👏💕⭐️
Exelent idea
Where we go next
Squares from other countries
Djarawong is the only rainforest selling Squares right now. These are the places we are working through with local conservation partners. Each one has to clear the same bar before it opens: land secured, a partner who will hold it, and a stewardship agreement we can show you.
Djarawong Rainforest
Mission Beach, Queensland
180 million year old Wet Tropics rainforest, held by C4 and home to the endangered Southern Cassowary.
See the Squares →Fiji
Viti Levu
Tropical island rainforest and habitat for species found nowhere else.
Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea
One of the most biodiverse places on Earth, with large tracts of forest still standing.
Northern NSW
New South Wales, Australia
Gondwana rainforest, the same lineage as Djarawong, running south from the Wet Tropics.
Portugal
Portugal
Mediterranean forest and cork oak woodland, where fire and abandonment are the pressures.
Florida
Florida, USA
Wetland and coastal habitat under steady pressure from development.

Which size should I choose?
Start wherever feels comfortable. A Seed Square at $50 is a real metre with real coordinates, and it counts exactly as much per metre as a Canopy Keeper does. The larger sizes cost less per metre, so if you already know you want more than one, going up a size is cheaper than buying several small ones.
Can I add more Squares later?
Yes. New Squares are added to the same Protector Profile and appear alongside the ones you already hold on the map.
Why ten years, and what happens after?
You get the chance to renew before the ten years are up. That period is what your payment funds, and where we can arrange longer agreements with our conservation partner, we do.
It says ten years rather than forever because we only publish what our contracts actually support today. The goal is for this rainforest to stand permanently. The land title sits with C4, a registered Australian not-for-profit who hold and manage it as a conservation organisation, and we will tell you in good time what renewing involves.
What is a Square?
A Square is a documented unit of protection linked to a specific GPS-defined square metre of real conservation land. It is non-financial and does not transfer land ownership. You can name it, see it on the map, and track its impact.
Who owns the land?
The land is legally owned and managed by our conservation partner, C4 (Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation), a registered Australian not-for-profit. Square by Square facilitates funding and mapping.
Where does the money go?
Your contribution goes to land protection and stewardship, to the platform and administration behind the live map and the certificates, and to reaching more Protectors, which is our marketing cost. The split is not fixed, because land values and stewardship needs vary between projects.
Reaching new Protectors is currently the largest of the three. SquareBySquare is still small, and introducing a conservation model people have not seen before takes time and money. As more people find us through word of mouth, that cost falls and more goes to the land. As of June 2026 neither founder takes a salary. Our first full cost breakdown is due on the transparency page from Q1 2027.
What happens after I buy?
You receive a personalised certificate, your Square appears on the live map with the name you chose, and you get a Protector Profile showing the impact measured against your Squares.
Can I gift a Square?
Yes. At checkout, choose the gift option and enter the recipient's name and email. They receive their own digital certificate, and the Square is named for them on the live map.
